Bleak
House is the brave experiment made by the BBC in 2005, to dramatise
Charles Dickens' famous novel in a new and exciting form. Taking
the premise that Dickens originally wrote the novel as a serial published
in a nation newspaper, the BBC made it into a series of 15 half hour episodes,
shown twice a week on thursdays and fridays. It had a soap opera format,
using the swooping, moving camera tricks of contemporary dramas and having
each episode end on a cliff hanger. Just like any episode of Dallas!
It had the convoluted series of coincidences that move soap opera stories
onwards and a complicated cast of characters, with new ones popping up
all the time. It was immensely popular and was sold on to countless
numbers of countries to be shown again and again. It also boasted
the only television appearance of Gillian Anderson, after the X-Files.
(She had turned other television serials down and had concentrated on live
theatre, until she was offered the role of Lady Dedlock.)
