The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is the first of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series of novels by Alexander McCall Smith, set in Gaborone, Botswana, and featuring a Motswana lady, Precious Ramotswe. Precious' father dies, leaving her a fortune in cattle. She decides to sell them and use the money to set herself up as Botswana's first private detective. At first, clients are few, but she employs Grace Matakusi, who never fails to remind Precious that she got 97% at secretarial college. Precious also meets Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni, who will soon become very important in her life.
